Our Namesake, Mirabeau B. Lamar

Lamar Junior High is named after Mirabeau B. Lamar, the second president of the Republic of Texas. He is often referred to as the "Father of Texas Education" due to his strong advocacy for public education during his presidency in the 1830s and 1840s.

Lamar believed that a strong public education system was essential for the success of the Republic. Under his leadership, the Texas Congress set aside public lands specifically for the support of schools and universities, laying the foundation for the state's public education system. His vision and policies significantly influenced the development of education in Texas, which is why many schools and school districts across the state, including Lamar CISD, bear his name.
